The BMW 1-series M Coupé is consistently designed for the sporty driving pleasure. If the Sport BMW should be too hard, the suspension setup can be adjusted to the street conditions by the new KW DDC ECU coilover kit with adaptive damping control by the push of a button. You can choose between the modes “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. With the free KW DDC App, the damper characteristic can individually be configured via an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. For the secured WiFi-connection to the suspension control unit, just an optional W-LAN module is required. The KW DDC ECU coilover kit enables a continuous lowering of up to 35 mm within the German TÜV tested adjustment range.
The BMW 1-series M Coupé with its 250 kW (340 hp) strong inline six-cylinder with turbocharge and the suspension kit from BMW M3 is uncompromisingly setup for sporty dynamic. “While the M3 can optionally be equipped with electronic dampers from factory”, says Johannes Wacker, Product Manager at KW automotive, “this is not the case at the 1-series M Coupé. With our adaptive KW DDC ECU (Dynamic Damper Control Electronic Control Unit) coilover kits we have developed an interesting upgrade solution.” The KW DDC ECU coilover kit does not only allow to adjust the damper characteristics to the street conditions with the modes “Comfort”, Sport” and “Sport+”, but it can also be configured with the free KW DDC App by iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Independently from front and rear axle, the characteristic of the dampers can be setup within the KW safety requirements. The continuous damper setup allows to adjust the KW DDC ECU dampers individually from the maximum “Comfort”-setup with a very soft damping (displayed in the App as 0%) up to “Sport+” damper setup (displayed in the App as 100%). The secured communication between the KW DDC ECU suspension control unit and the iPhone is working via a optional available W-LAN module. Up to five own setups can be stored with the KW DDC App and afterwards shared with friends by email.
At the development of the adaptive KW DDC ECU coilover kit, the “Comfort”-mode was in the focus. The sporty serial damper setup of the 1-series M Coupé can be felt as too hard on irregular and wavy road surfaces. But in “Comfort” mode, the KW damper characteristic convince with a comfort oriented setup. Additionally the KW DDC control unit is able to read the vehicle data while driving the car, and it automatically adjusts the damping characteristics to the driving speed. In the “Sport” mode, the dampers work harmonically, while in “Sport+” mode, the BMW 1-series M Coupé allows a dynamic agility similar to the serial suspension kit from the M. In case of a technical defect, the KW DDC ECU coilover kit turns automatically into a mechanical failsafe-mode; a proportional valve immediately regulates into a neutral middle position and the dampers keep on working in the KW basic setup. Therefore all eventualities and user mistakes are defused.
With the KW DDC ECU coilover kit, a continuous lowering within the TÜV tested adjustment range of 10 - 35 mm at the front axle and 5 - 25 mm at the rear axle is possible. When installing the KW DDC ECU coilover kit, the original strut will be replaced by a complete mounted KW coilover strut in “inox line” stainless steel finish. The TÜV certificate is part of the delivery content, so that the new “iPhone coilover kit” can be entered into the registration papers without any problems.
In the next few months, KW automotive will develop and launch further innovative suspension solutions with Smartphone compatibility for the product family KW iSuspension. At the moment the “KW DDC ECU Kit” is available for BMW M3, BMW 3series (E91) Touring, VW Golf Mk 5 and VW Golf Mk 6R, VW Passat, Audi A4 and Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.
